You might have read about the trending plant extract CBD (cannabidiol), which has calming, anti-inflammatory and sebum balancing effects. It’s rich in antioxidant vitamins A, D and E and is packed with essential fatty acids. Now, this hemp derivative, from the flowers, leaves and stalks of the Cannabis sativa plant, is being championed as the latest wellness hero, cropping up in foods such as hemp milk and protein powder as well as in skincare brands which call out and champion its potent properties.
The difference between hemp and cannabis, though from the same plant genus, depends on how they are grown and bred: only CBD from hemp, which contains less 0.3% THC (and won’t get you high), can be legally used in foodstuffs and cosmetics . Higher levels of THC means it’s cannabis and illegal for cosmetic use in the UK.
Hemp has been a skincare sleeper for a while, feted by brands including The Body Shop, Dr Bronner’s and Jason while Malin + Goetz’s Cannabis range, Fresh’s Cannabis fragrances, Demeter’s Cannabis Flower and Nasomatto’s Black Afgano all reference the aroma of the marijuana plant. But it’s been somewhat underground and has tended to be limited to health brands.
Now, though, CBD is trending, partly due to the halo effect around the legalisation of Cannabis in some US states, but also as an expression of the clean beauty movement which champions nature-driven skincare. Less tangible, but not to be dismissed, is the growing countercultural mindset that identifies CBD as a truly alternative medicine. At a time when we’re all looking to the power of nature for our beauty fixes, CBD has all the right credentials.
